Dealing with Nancy

Step 1: Show negative Nancy this cute pup. Jk. (Or am I?--might be a good idea).

Since my blog is called "The High Road Less Traveled," I feel like I should dedicate this next blog post to taking the high road. There are days when taking the high road feels next to impossible, especially when dealing with negative people. Instead of getting upset at those people, take a step back—it makes all the difference. Negative people are going to be a constant throughout your life. The key is to never let that negative energy affect you. There are so many ways to do this:

1. RUN FORREST RUN

Lets face it. Everyone has that one person they immediately think of that brings them down. If this friend is always bringing you down, avoid them. Life should be lived to the fullest (and in my opinion, the happiest). There are many battles you will overcome in your life and one battle shouldn't be with your negative friend.

2. Kill 'em with kindness
Sometimes avoiding these people isn’t an option—they are a part of life. I can thank my grandma for this one (thanks grandma)—kill them with kindness. In every difficult situation with Nancy, I throw out positivity and kindness into whatever they are pessimistic about. It’s hard for them to argue with you when all you are is kind and happy.

Change the subject. When life gives you rotten lemons, make margaritas. When someone is in a mood, it’s easy to let their energy spread to everyone else and soon the whole day becomes negative. If they are talking bad about someone, change the subject or say something positive about that person. Do your best to try and make the conversation as positive as it can be. Turn those negatives into positives (fist bump).

4. Sometimes I like to hang glide on a Dorito.
When the adversity starts, a change of scenery could change the mood quickly. Let’s say your Negative Nancy is sitting in your living room bad mouthing anyone from her neighbor to her boyfriend, suggest y’all go on a walk or out to lunch/dinner. Going somewhere else could also mean meeting up with other people (leaving Nancy less opportunities to be negative).

5. Thanks, Joseph, Joey— JK Joe.
This last one is dedicated to one of the best life quotes. Thank you Princess Diaries for making it common knowledge.
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.
- Eleanor Roosevelt

Just like no one can make you feel inferior without your consent, no one can ruin your mood unless you let them. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about yourself. You are who you are and you should always be proud of that. Hopefully now, when someone brings you down, you can never let it get to you again.
